Weekend Warrior Monday

I'm planning to do a few more personal posts, so we'll start with a Monday summary of my weekend events since a few people believe I lead a bit of a crazy life. I hadn't noticed!

Some posts will certainly involve what we've done with our horses over the weekend, but some will share what I've learned from a marathon writing session (assuming the weather kept me inside,) and a few will combine both of those things. I have one planned discussing how writing is like training horses - been pondering this a while.

But today will share a weekend a little more exciting than most. A week ago last Monday, lightning struck a tree about three miles from my house. Three miles of very rugged terrain with no houses or roads in between. BLM monitored it rather than fighting because of the difficult access.

On Thursday it expanded from an acre to five acres and sent up plumes of smoke, but was still not of much concern. My husband and I drove to the strike site to get GPS coordinates to see how close it was to our house on the other side of a big ridge. Three miles. Still not much to worry about even though the wind was picking up.

Next morning we were putting shoes on a horse and halfway through, noticed a huge black cloud. Something changed. The fire jumped to 60 acres. We watched for a bit, then realized they'd never get it out by nightfall, so evacuated our six horses, two cats and one dog. We slept in our living quarter horse trailer. Just like camping out since we have some wonderful friends with room for the extra beasties.

Saturday we had nothing else to do, so we did a 13 mile ride with two horses and realized what my husband thought was a pollen allergy was really a cold. He's miserable through all this.

As I write this on Sunday afternoon, the fire is 10% contained, but the wind is picking up, and the firefighters have asked to set up an observation post on our roof since our property is the highest in our area. And one of the closest to the active spots.

Now we wait. We're glad the horses are out. We can evacuate in five minutes if it blows up. Will I have a house when this posts on Monday? I don't know. But if I have an internet connection I will post any news.

I'd love if readers can read/comment/tweet about any of my recent posts since I won't be able to keep the ball rolling on some recent cover reveals and book announcements. Thank you!

Update for Tuesday 7/1/2014 - Our evacuation has been lifted. Despite temps near 100 and gusty winds, the helicopters kept up a steady water and slurry dump routine and kept the fire from growing. We also learned that on Saturday they dumped a whole line of slurry with a DC10 between us and the fire. There are only a few hot spots left although they won't be able to claim containment because the terrain is too rough to put men on the ground for more than half of the perimeter. We're going to pick up our horses today, but we'll stay alert and ready for any changes.

Guest post - Jennie Marts, author of Just Another Maniac Monday

Book Synopsis

Is finding your long-lost love worth losing your life?
Edna Allen’s Monday goes from mundane to murderous when she opens the front door to find the love of her life standing there. A man she thought had died years ago… after being accused of murder. John Collins is back, bringing with him a charming smile, a dog named Havoc, a second chance at loveand a threat of death. Danger surrounds this former bad-boy, and even after a lifetime apart, he still ignites a spark in Edna. A spark she thought she’d buried decades earlier. As Edna relives their summer romance, where more than the weather was hot and steamy, she falls in love all over again and evokes memories filled with drama, passion, action, and murder. Now these soul-mates must face the truth about what happened in the past and find the killer hunting them in the present. And Edna, with her sarcastic wit, a pocket stun-gun, and a few hare-brained schemes, is ready to fight for the man who still makes her pulse race. But does she dare risk her heart again to now protect the man whom she couldn’t save back then?

A Word From The Author

Thanks so much for hosting me on your blog today! I am excited to introduce you to the Page Turners Book Club.
I write romantic comedy and my series is set in the small town of Pleasant Valley, Colorado. It’s centered around a wonderful group of women in a book club. The women range from their teen years to their eighties and each book features a different woman and her story.
Every book has romance, friendship and mystery because in Pleasant Valley, dating can be deadly. These women are easy to fall in love with as they search for romance and clues while eating really great desserts!
Just Another Maniac Monday- Book 3 in the Page Turners series released this week. It’s Edna’s story and this character is a funny, sassy eighty-year-old who considers herself an expert on murder due to her extensive knowledge of CSI and crime-show television episodes. She gets the surprise of her life when her Monday morning game shows are interrupted by the arrival of John Collins, the love of her lifea man she thought had died years ago after being accused of murder.
John Collins is back, bringing with him a charming smile, a dog named Havoc, a second chance at loveand a threat of death. Danger surrounds this former bad-boy, and even after a lifetime apart, he still ignites a spark in Edna. A spark she thought she’d buried decades earlier.
This book flashes back to the sultry summer of 1955 as Edna tells the love story of her and Johnny and more than the weather gets hot and steamy. But the past has a way of catching up to you and a deadly threat has followed John to Edna’s door. Edna, with her sarcastic wit, a pocket stun-gun, and a few hare-brained schemes, is ready to fight for the man who still makes her pulse race.
Falling in love all over again, Edna must choose to risk it all to save the man she loves. But is finding your long lost love worth losing your life?

Author Interview with Sandi Beth Jones, author of Byronic

Today we have an interview with Sandi Beth Jones. Her cover reveal was posted here.

Can you tell us about your book, BYRONIC, in 20 words or less?Byronic is a Frankenstein retelling about an artist capable of extraordinary things, but she must first learn whom she can trust.
What was your favorite scene to write?
I love all the scenes between Geoff and Chelsea, especially how they learn more and more about each other as their relationship develops.
What was the hardest scene to edit out?
I had a different scene at the end, but I hope the new ending is more satisfying.

Is this a standalone or will there be a sequel?I’m working on the sequel, Prometheus Unbound, right now!!
What is one of your favorite quotes from Byronic?
I flipped through the pages, searching frantically, yet trying not to tear or wrinkle my work. I heard Geoff’s intake of breath and realized he was seeing all my work for the first time. The pretty, the weird, and the gruesome—all together in one place as the tangible evidence I. Was. A. Freak.

If you could cast anyone to play some of the main characters who would you choose?I would cast a younger Brooklyn Sudano as Chelsea. Geoff would be Douglas Booth, since he can do that hot brooding look and has a British accent! And as for Stella, I think a younger Tia Mowry would be perfect. Lewis would be a gorgeous model—maybe like Zenith Harvey.
When did you first decide that you wanted to be an author?
I can’t remember a time I didn’t! I wrote and illustrated my first book when I was about 8, but I became serious about it in high school. I wrote a short story as an assignment, and all of us kids traded our stories for feedback. When the others said they enjoyed mine, I was hooked!

What is currently in your TBR pile?I’m reading Fatal by T. A. Brock! (Host note - that one's up soon on my list too!)

A member of the lowest rung of society, she must serve the ship’s Officials and Astronauts as punishment for her grandparents' crimes back on Earth. It is the perfect opportunity to gather intel for the Lifer’s brewing rebellion. There’s just one problem—the last girl who went to the upper levels never came back.

Taming the Country Star by Margo Bond Collins - excerpt

Glitter-and-guitar
Blurb:
He'll do anything to win her heart. She'll do anything to keep him away.
Country star Cole Grayson is in town, and Kylie Andrews is less than thrilled. As if months of changing the radio station and tearing down his posters weren’t bad enough, now she has to deal with a town of fans swarming toward the man who deceived her the year before. But when Kylie’s eyes meet Cole’s again, she can’t deny the electric chemistry that drew her to him the first time around.   Cole Grayson is on a mission. Ever since Kylie left him, he hasn’t been able to forget her sweet country smile. After writing a song just for her, he sets off for her hometown to prove he’s not the player she thinks he is. But as much as Cole can’t forget her, Kylie wonders if she can forgive him…

TamingtheCountryStar

Excerpt:

Kylie Andrews’s Texas-themed gift shop, Cowbelles, sat on the very outer edge of Fort Worth’s Stockyards District, not far from Jimmy’s Honky Tonk. And much to her dismay, no matter how often she cleared it, the wall adjacent to her store remained covered with announcements for local events. Like, for example, concerts.

She stared at the latest layer of advertisements.

From the topmost poster, Cole Grayson stared out at her, leaning against the edge of an old barn door, guitar at his feet. One booted foot was kicked up against the wooden wall behind him. His dark-blond hair curled around behind one ear and fell down across his eye on the other side. A cowboy hat rested on the ground next to the guitar. Her hand drifted up toward the image, hovering several inches from the picture of his face. She glanced around. None of the other shopkeepers were outside.

No one was watching. “Bastard,” she whispered to herself, and ripped the poster off the wall. At least, she tried to. It was thicker than she had expected, attached more firmly, and it resisted her pull. Chewing on her lip, she took another look around, dropped her bag to the ground, and reached up to grasp the edge with both fists, jerking at it in opposite directions. A tiny tear opened up along the side, and she yanked harder. Finally, the poster ripped—right across Cole Grayson’s lying eyes.

She tugged at the image some more, glancing around surreptitiously every few moments and dropping ragged pieces of paper on the ground at her feet, until there was nothing left on the wall but a few fluttering strips. Gathering the mutilated shreds together, she opened her bag and shoved them inside until they overflowed, bright ribbons of color in the morning light.

Looking at The Edge of Tomorrow in writing terms

Last night, for my 24th anniversary (oops, dating myself there for sure), we went to see The Edge of Tomorrow because I wanted popcorn more than a fancy meal.

The blurb is Groundhog Day meets Starship Troopers, and boy does that fit perfectly. Add in watching Tom Cruise die over and over, works for me! And I did enjoy the movie, but the writer in me picked at it a bit.

I didn't like the opening. Basically a bunch of news stories trying to set the situation. But they were all backstory and telling. Very generic and fell flat. Plus, all I really wanted to know was why did they call the aliens Mimics. Never figured that out through the entire movie.

Next we meet Cruise's character. It's really impossible for Tom Cruise to play a wimpy, gutless non-wonder. No reason for his wimpiness. Yes, I know there are people in the military who got there in peace time and never expected to actually fight, I know a couple of them. But it just didn't fit. Maybe he had family he worried about leaving (not, of course there's a love interest coming!) Something. His behavior felt very manufactured to get him on the front lines as well as provide some level of a character arc. Beyond flat.

Then the story really started. Aside from the completely illogical reason for him repeating the day over and over, the meat of the movie was awesome. The aliens are intense, Cruise has to manipulate a day over and over to get to a point where he's got a chance at beating the aliens. Intense moments plus some really funny moments. Most of which involved watching Cruise buy it. Painfully.

The climax worked well, lots of tension, make-it-harder etc. I didn't like the setup for the last scene. I don't think there's any good logic for Cruise to have lived. The movie would still have been satisfying if he sacrificed himself and died. Maybe that's just me!

Have you seen this movie? What did you think? Is watching movies more or less fun as an analytical writer?

The Guest Post

Hadley and Lily’s Top ‘Summer to Remember’ Must Haves

Hadley: Hey everyone. My best friend, Lily, and me are going to tell you our top must haves for this summer.

Lily: This girl is headed to college in the Fall and it’s our last summer together before “growing up”. I’ll start! My number one is boys.

Hadley: (eye roll)

Lily: What? Boys are important for a summer to remember. And now that we’re both single we can have a little fun with them.

Hadley: Are you done?

Lily: Fine. What’s your number one?

Hadley: (grins) My best friend.

Lily: Oh! And a job working with your best friend.

Hadley: Yes that too.

Lily: (pauses dramatically) And on a serious note…sunscreen.

Hadley: UV protection is important.

Lily: I was thinking more along the lines of awful tan lines.

Hadley: Okay…

Lily: Next is…parties. And oh! Older brothers who can get supplies for parties, if you know what I mean.

Hadley: Oh my God…

Lily: So we have boys, best friends, a job WITH a best friend, sunscreen, parties, brothers, what else?

Hadley: Camp!

Lily: That counts as a job with your best friend.

Hadley: Camp should be a category of its own—

Lily: Here we go…

Hadley: But without camp we wouldn’t have had the best summers of our lives. And we will be a part of making that happen for the kids.

Lily: Yeah. I’m still sticking with boys.

Hadley: You’re hopeless, but I do love you! Well that does it, everyone. Be sure to make this summer, a summer to remember. And comment below with your must haves I’d love to hear them!

Each night, he risks his eternal life, having given up his chance at an afterlife when he chose to become a Protector. That doesn’t stop a burnt-out Daniel from risking daring maneuvers during each battle. He’s become one of the best, but he wants nothing more than to stop.

Then he’s given an assignment to watch over sixteen-year-old Kayla Bartlett, a clinically depressed patient in a psychiatric ward. Nightmares love a human with a tortured past. Yet, when they take a deep interest in her, appearing in unprecedented numbers, the job becomes more dangerous than any Daniel’s ever experienced. He fights ruthlessly to keep the Nightmares from overwhelming his team and Kayla. Soon, Daniel finds himself watching over Kayla during the day, drawn to why she’s different, and what it is about her that attracts the Nightmares. And him.

A vicious attack on Kayla forces Daniel to break the first Law and reveal his identity. Driven by his growing feelings for her, he whisks her away to Rome where others like him can keep her safe. Under their roof, the Protectors discover what Kayla is and why someone who can manipulate Nightmares has her in his sights. But before they can make a move, the Protectors are betrayed and Kayla is kidnapped. Daniel will stop at nothing to save her. Even if it means giving up his immortality.

About Vicki:

Adopted at three-days-old by a construction worker and a stay-at-home mom, Vicki Leigh grew up in a small suburb of Akron, Ohio where she learned to read by the age of four and considered being sent to her room for punishment as an opportunity to dive into another book. By the sixth grade, Vicki penned her first, full-length screenplay. If she couldn’t be a writer, Vicki would be a Hunter (think Dean and Sam Winchester) or a Jedi. Her favorite place on earth is Hogwarts (she refuses to believe it doesn’t exist), and her favorite dreams include solving cases alongside Sherlock Holmes.

Title: MIRROR X
Author: Karri Thompson
Publisher: Entangled Teen
Pub. Date: June 30, 2014

I was born more than a thousand years ago.

Put into a cryogenic tube at age seventeen, forgotten during a holocaust that decimated the world, I've finally been awakened to a more serene and peaceful future.

But things at the hospital are new and strange. And it’s starting to scare me.

Everyone is young. Everyone is banded and tracked. And everyone is keeping secrets.

The cute geneticist Michael Bennett might be the only good thing in this crazy new world where “life is precious” but no one seems free to live it. The problem is, I don’t think he’s being totally honest with me, either.

When I’m told only I can save the human race from extinction, it’s clear my freeze didn’t avoid a dreadful fate. It only delayed the horror…

Exclusive Excerpt!
Michael took a seat on the edge of my bed, rocking me toward him. When the side of my thigh met his knee, my heart rate doubled, and I drew in a deep breath.
“Before you were awakened I spent hours at your bedside imaging what you were like, how your voice would sound, how you looked when you smiled. When your red lips pulsed, when your chest heaved, and you took your first breath, I kept my emotions in check. But now, now that you’ve ‘awakened,’ everything is different. I can’t sleep. I can’t stop thinking about you.”
I ignored the pain and tilted closer until the space between our faces was less than a foot. My heart, my mind, my soul—everything yearned for his affection at that moment.
“I feel the same way, too.”
I closed my eyes, wanting this handsome, earnest guy to take me into his arms and tell me he’d make them let me go. My lungs expanded with his warm breath and spicy scent. When his lips met mine, every atom in my body danced, urging me to pull him closer and tighten my grip upon his back.
His kissing became more fiery and I reacted by kissing him harder. It wasn’t until his mouth moved to my neck, that I came to my senses and drew away.
“Not yet,” I said, scooting away.
“I know,” he said between breaths, rising from the bed. His wiped his forehead with the sleeve of his uniform and returned to the chair. “I can’t…we can’t. We can never…,” he said abruptly. “It’s against protocol. I-I should go.”

Beyond The Count ed. Margo Bond Collins

Book Synopsis

Long before Dracula, vampires stalked the literary scene. These early literary vampires are sometimes terrifying, at times melodramatic, and occasionally ridiculous, but they are always out for blood—and their vampiric descendants continue to fascinate and captivate us. Beyond the Count is a collection of vampire stories, plays, and poems from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. This collection gives students, scholars, and vampire aficionados the opportunity to examine works often long out of print and to contextualize the development of vampire legend beyond that most famous of literary Counts.
