Then there’s Nick. He’s a
straight-A student and self-professed geek who’s had a thing for her since
middle school. He needs a date for the winter formal, and Katie needs something
to keep her busy. Nick’s plight becomes her personal pet project. She will help
him get over his insecurities and get a date. Besides, she was popular once.
She knows how to get dates.
But Nick has other plans.
He’s going to use these “dating” lessons as a way to win Katie’s heart.
MY REVIEW:
Fallling for Shakespeare is a cute YA romance about Katie, a
girl who used to have it all and then became the school pariah when her sister
became pregnant. She survives because an old friend she once shunned is still
there for her. Nic welcomes her into his geek group – and pines away his
lasting love for her. In the meantime, Katie recognizes that Nic really has
been there for her, so she wants to help him find love. She gives him dating
advice. From there, the lines blur between “training” and reality as Nic tries
to impress Katie with his dating skills.
The book is written from dual perspectives of both Nic and
Katie. This may have been an unfortunate choice because throughout the book we
know Nic loves Katie and probably will forever. We also see Katie notice Nic
and fall for him. There’s never any doubt where the book is going or that we’ll
get there with very little trauma.
Nic is a great guy who even buys Katie a dress when he knows
she can’t afford it as things are a little tough with her sister’s baby now in
the family. It’s fun to watch Katie’s grumbling about her niece – but then she
clearly loves and enjoys spending time with her. Katie’s main nemesis certainly
has the cruel girl thing down and it’s sad to see how one person’s insecurities
can drive a whole school to treat someone badly, especially for the actions of
a relative. But, sigh, high school. But it’s also good to see that teen
pregnancy is celebrated as something cool or desireable.
Falling for Shakespeare a cute story and of course the
reader will root for the couple to finally get together. The writing is clean
with very few typos and grammar mistakes. Some things felt a bit forced to have
a teen voice – which will date the book in short time. This in an excellent
book for readers who aren’t into a lot of stress in their romances.
I give this 3.5 stars, rounding to 4 in most systems.
